What to Look For

Luster

Luster is the way light moves across a pearl. A bright, mirror-like reflection reads as luminous and polished. A softer, more diffused glow feels gentle and understated.

Neither is better—only more suited to the piece you're building.

Surface

A pearl grows inside a living creature. Small dimples, rings, ridges, or uneven patches are part of that process. A cleaner surface leans toward refinement; visible texture leans toward the organic.

Think of surface not in isolation, but together with luster, shape, and the feeling you want the finished piece to carry.

Shape

Round and near-round pearls hold a classic, composed presence. Oval, button, drop, and baroque shapes feel softer—more sculptural, more personal.

Shape is never just a grading category. It's a design decision.

Size

Measured in millimeters, pearl size shapes the proportion of the piece. Smaller pearls read as delicate and intimate; larger pearls command attention.

Size alone doesn't signal quality. It only makes sense in relation to luster, surface, shape, and the scale of the finished jewelry.

Color

Freshwater pearls drift through white, cream, blush, peach, and lavender. Subtle overtones—pink, silver, green—can shift the same pearl from warm to cool under different light, different screens, different times of day.
